TWO SINS
Jer. 2:13
"My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me, the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water”
Isn’t
that the way it is? We want to do things our own way. We want to be able to
say, “I made this with my own hands, I accomplished this in my own strength,
this was my idea.” The problem is that what we dream up, what we make is just
as flawed as we are. What we accomplish is just as weak as we are. Like the
metaphorical cisterns, our creations just won’t hold water! Notice that the
Word doesn’t say, “cisterns that don’t hold water,” it says, “cisterns
that cannot hold water.” The truth is that our best intentions and
grandest efforts will always ultimately fail. Yet there is a source that never
fails, a source of living water. This passage from Jeremiah reminds me of what
Jesus says in Jn. 4:14 – “Whoever drinks the water I give him will
never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring
of water welling up to eternal life," and in Rev. 21:6 – “. . . I
am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I
will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.”
We must all be careful not to spend our effort and energy trying to re-do what
has already been perfectly done for us by Christ.
